Pt. Prithi Nath (PG) College, Kanpur

The Department of Chemistry at the P.P.N. (P.G.) College started its journey in early nineteen sixties. The department was established in 1962 with a two years undergraduate program and was raised to Post graduate level in 1965, and maintained vigorous momentum under galaxy of exceptionally gifted faculty members over these years. Since, last 60 years of its origin, the department has been imparting the quality education with broad knowledge of subjects and excellent teacher‒student relations to more than 500 students every year, under the able guidance of well qualified faculty members. Currently, Dr. Nidhi Srivastava (Professor) is the Head of the Department, she took over the responsibilities in October, 2017. Dr. Monal Singh (Associate Professor), Dr. Dhananjay Singh (Associate Professor), Dr. Anita Rai (Associate Professor), Dr. Sudha Agrawal (Assistant Professor), Dr. Yashveer Gautam (Assistant Professor), Mr. Rohit Kumar Maurya (Assistant Professor), Dr. Anoop Kumar Gupta (Assistant Professor)and part time teachers are accompanying her to raise the department to further higher dimension. All teachers are research oriented and has published many papers in National and International journals. Dr. Yashveer Gautam and Dr. Arvind Singh Negi (Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow), et al. achieved patient for the invention of anticancer compound for the treatment of various type of cancer. Dr. Anoop Kumar Gupta was awarded with highly prestigious National Post-doctoral Fellowship sanctioned by Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), MHRD, New Delhi.  Currently, a research project is under progress leading by Dr. Anita Rai sanctioned with a HE, Allahabad. Furthermore, three more Research Project are also in progress leading by Dr. Monal Singh, Dr. Anita Rai and Dr. Yashveer Gautam sanctioned with a CV RAMAN CSJMU.

Currently, the department is working as a teaching Powerhouse, dedicated to shaping the future of the students, by pushing the boundaries of knowledge in the class-room and laboratories. Classes are run regularly, for all levels of UG and PG standards. Students are free to clear their doubts from teachers in the staff room. To develop the concept of the subject teaching aids like 3D models and Power point presentation, through projector, are also used.

The department has five well equipped laboratories for under-graduate and post-graduate students and research scholars. Students are given a regular curriculum, for practical training, in the laboratories, as per syllabus. The concept and principles of chemistry are experimentally elaborated, through experiment in lab, to develop the technical aptitude in students.

There is also a well-organized departmental library for post-graduate students and research scholars, where students can do their study in silence and also borrow reading materials required. Students can also clear their doubts with the teacher in-charge. There are more than one thousand quality books in the library written by well-known authors. The library is regularly updated and upgraded, through addition of latest books, magazines and journals.

Besides teaching, the department organizes class room seminars, debates and tutorials to develop the interest in gaining knowledge, skills and motivation in chemistry and other subjects. This the only department in the University, which is assigning research oriented projects and seminars to post-graduate students, to prepare them as future academia and scientist.

To relate the theoretical knowledge to practical aspects of the studied courses, we take a tour to an industry, to show the students, the relevance of the syllabus and job opportunities in Chemical Science.

In the last 10 years greater number of students (> 50) of this department, have qualified numerous entrance exams such as NET/JRF, GATE, JAM, TIFR and have been appointed as Research Scholars I various reputed institutes like IISs, IITs, NITs, IISERs, CSIR-Labs, CDRI, TIFR, DRDO, HBTI, BHU,…etc and have jobs with various prestigious organizations.

Our aim is to competitively position, our students for current and future success, through exceptional teaching, learning and research experiences.

Achievements of Last few Years:

1. Kirti Dhawan (M.Sc., 2016) received 3 gold medals of CSJM University, for scoring highest marks in M.Sc. Chemistry.
2. Abhishek Mishra (B. Sc.-M. Sc., 2016) received “Professor B. C. Haldar Memorial Award” in the Annual Convention of Chemists, 2020 (International conference on “Recent Trends in Chemical Sciences, RTCS-2020”) organized by the Indian Chemical Society, Kolkata, December, 2020.
3. Apoorna Pandey (M. Sc., 2017) cracked the UPPCS examination and currently worked as Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM).
4. Nishant Gupta (M. Sc., 2017) qualified NET, CSIR exam of December, 2017.
5. Shalini Singh (M.Sc., 2018) received Shayama Devi Gold Medal 2018 of University, in year 2018 for achieving highest marks in Second Paper of M. Sc. Chemistry.
6. Diksha Mishra (M. Sc., 2018) qualified NET, CSIR, and GATE exam of December, 2018.
7. Zangila (M. Sc., 2018) qualified NET, CSIR exam of December, 2019.
8. Darshika Singh (B. Sc. III, 2019) qualified JAM (Chemistry) and pursuing her M. Sc. From IIT Patna.
9. Kirti Singh (B. Sc. III, 2020) qualified JAM (Chemistry) and pursuing her M. Sc. From IIT Kharagpur.
10. Aman Shukla (M. Sc., 2022) did Graduate Research Internship Programme (6 month) in JNCASR, Bangalore and CST-UP Summer Research Fellowship Programme (2 month) in IIScBangalore. Currently, working as R.A. at VIT, Vellore.
11. Soumya Mishra (M. Sc., 2022) qualified GATE, 2022.
12. Shubhi Sachan (M. Sc. 2022) currently working in the renowned Jubilant pharmova.
