National Service Scheme

National Service Scheme is a central sector scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The motto of National Service Scheme is NOT ME BUT YOU. It provides an opportunity to the youth of the nation to participate in various government delegated community service activities and programs. This scheme was started in the year 1969 under Gandhian influence with the objective of developing the personality of the students by engaging them in disciplinary, cultural and intellectual programs. It aims at development of will-power to help the needy through community service, the youth to serve the nation and institutions and utilize their abilities by helping the needy. The post-independence era was marked by an urge for introducing social service for students, both as a measure of educational reform and to improve the quality of educated manpower. All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping needy. The University Grants Commission headed by Dr. Radhakrishnan recommended introduction of national social service in the academic institutions on a voluntary basis with a view to developing healthy contacts between the students and teachers on the one hand and establishing a constructive linkage between the campus and the community on the other hand. On September 24, 1969, the then Union Education Minister Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao, launched the NSS programme in 37 universities covering all States and simultaneously requested the Chief Ministers of States for their cooperation and help. NSS was launched in 1969 in 37 Universities also involving Chhattrapati Sahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur as one of them who has NSS AS A UNIT since 2010 and under the guidance of several program officers it is flourishing day by day since then. Let’s have a look at these one by one .

SPECIAL PROGRAMME- BASTI PATHSHALA

In the slums of Gwaltoli, PPN NSS unit volunteers under the guidance of program officer Prof. Krishna Kumar started the interactive drive with the people living in slums of Gwalatoli and Chuniganj and gave them a comfortable environment to share their problems. For those children of this area who do not go to school, we arrange Basti Pathshala on a daily basis with the consent of their parents. Every day these students gather and our NSS volunteers then impart basic education. We have also allocated funds to provide them with the books and stationery they need. Also, occasionally we give these children gifts like some eatable treats and also help them with activities like art and crafts. To bring these slums in vibrant light, we have organized a program like Yoga Day program here on 21st June. Now the surprising thing is that from one year from 2022 to 2023 this initiative is running very well and on a continuous basis due to which we can include more than 70 to 75 children in our Basti Pathshala and provide them with education. They are also able to get help when needed.
