About Sociology Department

PPN (PG) college has made major contributions to the growth of Kanpur’s education and educational environment. Since its inception, the college has attempted to keep the streams of knowledge flowing in society. As It is well known, the basic idea of education is to bind personality in humans. College education strives to develop all aspects of a human personality.

Since the inception of the knowledge stream of education, it has contributed to the achievement of the main goals of education by diverting through many disciplines. Sociology, among other things, is a major discipline. The college made efforts to develop separate departments of various subjects, and actual shape was given to them. A similar effort was made by establishing a discipline as a Sociology department to ensure a continual flow of knowledge. The Sociology department’s roots can be found in the early days of college. In 1959, Sociology was established as a separate department. Before 1980, it was running UG classes only. Since 1980, Department of Sociology started to conduct PG classes also. The department of sociology has been attempting to make a name for itself in research since 1980. However, with the help of Professors S P Vajpayee, S D Saxena, and others, the sociology department of 2002 was able to establish its identity. However, after 2002, it was able to establish its identity in the field of research and on a national basis. Under the direction of Dr. T. B. Singh, research work and the department are now ongoing. Dr. Singh’s effective management of the department’s growth is commendable. 50 research papers have currently been published, and one UGC-sponsored project has been successfully finished. 4 Ph.D.s have been successfully granted under his supervision, and he is currently supervising 3 Ph.D.s. He is the author of 11 books, many of which are very well-liked by sociology students.

Prof. Krishna Kumar and Kunwar Mahendra Pratap Singh, who is Assistant Professor, are two of the department’s skilled and committed academic members. Prof. Kumar is a well-known sociologist who has significantly advanced the fields of criminology and social stratification research. There have been 12 or so research papers published. Under the direction of Prof. Kumar, one Ph.D. was successfully completed, and three more are currently being worked on. Ten students are completing their dissertations under the guidance of Professor Kumar. Expertise in digital sociology, sociology of change and development, and sociology of religion may be found in Kunwar Mahendra Pratap Singh. Mr. Singh is conducting study on social media’s effects on many societal institutions, including marriage, education, family, and religion. 11 students who are working on social media and its various societal implications are mentored by Mr. Singh. Both professors are actively involved in a range of academic and research activities and have a strong dedication to both teaching and research. All faculty members behold life membership of the prestigious INDIAN SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY, which allows them to regularly attend their sponsored seminars and present research papers related to new research. Kunwar Mahendra Pratap Singh is also a member of the prestigious INTERNATIONAL SOCIOLOGICAL SOCIETY and actively participates in the various ISS activities.

The students taking the Pre-Ph.D. coursework attended special lectures during the COVID-19. The highly regarded department organized international webinars to raise awareness of the need to maintain social order during the pandemic. In order to be in constant contact with the kids and ensure that their education was unaffected by the pandemic and helped them build up their mental health.
