The department of Economics is one of the strongest pillars among the 18 departments on which the glory and success of the prestigious PPN PG college stands. By the sincere efforts of the faculty members and hard labour of the students, the result of the Economics department has always remained remarkable. Our students have established themselves in illustrious careers and are leading great lives.

The department is well equipped with a research room, computer, printer and the departmental library. As per the New Education Policy, we work on the robust internal assessment mechanism which includes assignments, presentations, class tests, quiz and group discussions so that the students would get ready as per the changing job requirements and help them to indulge actively in classroom teaching and learning. We provide remedial classes to the students. We have a teacher mentor for all the classes who give career counseling from time to time. We organise Fresher and Farewell parties for the students to promote their holistic development and inculcate team spirit among them.

The pass percentage of our students remained between 98% to 100% for BA and MA during the last five years. The University Gold Medal was awarded to Pragya Tewari in 2020-21 for getting the highest marks in M.A. Economics and Pradyumn Gupta got IInd highest marks in MA Economics in 2019-20 among all the colleges affiliated to CSJM University, Kanpur.

Our students, who have qualified for UGC-NET/JRF exams during the last six years, are Deeksha Srivastava (JRF-2022), Pradyumn Gupta (JRF-2022), Rupal Verma (NET-2022), Pragya Tewari (NET-2022), Supriya Verma (NET-2021), Pushpanjali Paul (NET-2019), Sanjay Kumar (JRF-2018), Neha Singh (NET-2018), Sukriti Shukla (NET-2018), Pooja Sahu (NET-2017). The total number of qualified students in NET/JRF has been around 25 since 2005.

Prof. Allahabad Univ. Allahabad), Anshika Srivastava (Branch Manager, IDBI, Kanpur), Namrata Srivastava ( Statistical Officer, Lucknow), Dr Ruchi Saxena (Dept of Eco, Bareilly College, Bareilly), Sri Naresh Uttam (Member of Legislative Council, Uttar Pradesh), Dr Rajeev Kumar (Manager, Provincial Co-op. Federation, Lucknow), Prof Nar Singh (Former Head, Dept. of Applied Economics, Lucknow Univ.), Dr Ajeet Kumar Singh (Professor and Head, Govt. Degree College, Shivrajpur). We have many more gems who are doing very well in their fields working sincerely in nation building.

We have had knowledgeable and sincere teachers in our department since its inception. When the college was opened in 1959, this department was headed by Dr. K.J. Srivastava. At that time, the department was providing a graduation degree. In 1969, it upgraded itself by starting P.G. classes. In 1970, Dr J.N. Nigam, a multi-dimensional personality joined as Reader and Head. He went to Russia for research. Dr Krishana Thakur joined the department in the same year. Dr S.N. Singh and Dr M.A. Khan joined the department in 1972. Prof. R. K. Dixit joined the college in 1996. Presently, Prof. Vandana Dwivedi is the head of the department who joined the college in 2003. Dr Vivek Singh joined the college in 2010, Dr Alka Asthana in 2017 and Mr Lalit Maurya in 2018. All the faculty members are highly qualified having NET/Ph.D degrees and a good academic record. Prof. R K Dixit was the member and later he was the convener of BOS, CSJM University, Kanpur. Prof. Vandana Dwivedi is presently in the BOS, Bundelkhand University, Jhansi.

The faculty members are continuously engaged in research activities along with providing regular classes and helping the students to set and achieve their career goals. The glimpses of research work by our teachers are – 1 CV Raman Minor Research Project (2022-23), 3 UGC sponsored minor research project (2005), 6 publications in UGC-CARE list of journals & more than 30 publications in other peer reviewed journals with ISBN numbers, more than 10 chapters in edited books, 3 Ph.D awarded in 2022 & around 30 Ph.D awarded till time. Besides this, 10 research scholars are working presently for a Ph.D degree under the able supervision of Economics faculty and more than 70 dissertations have been supervised till time related to economic issues, sustainable development, environmental concerns, financial challenges, banking , insurance and social sector.

We had organised a one-day seminar on “Financial Literacy in association with the Reserve Bank of India” on 25th January, 2019 and 7th February 2020 to educate the students and the faculty members against financial frauds. A workshop was also organised on “Issues and Initiatives in MSME Sector” on 25th July 2019. The guest speaker was Dr Nitesh Dhawan, Assistant Commissioner, Department of Handloom and Textiles, Government of Uttar Pradesh. We had also organised one symposium on “The Role of Intellectuals in Nation Building” in association with Paharue The Civil Society on 15th December 2021.
