It is crucial to emphasize that these tests serve as qualifications which is conducted twice a year (June & Dec) and do not automatically confer a fellowship upon the candidate.

- Eligibility: Candidates qualifying in NET-JRF or the UGC-CSIR joint test are eligible. However, registration for PhD must be completed by the Universities/Institutions/Colleges within two years from the date of result declaration or issuance of the award letter/date of fellowship initiation.
- Nature of assistance available under the scheme:
- The tenure of the fellowship is initially set for two years under the JRF scheme.
- Upon the completion of this period, the Fellow’s work will be evaluated by experts. If deemed satisfactory, the tenure will be extended for an additional three years under the enhanced emoluments of the Senior Research Fellowship (SRF).
- If the research work in the first two years is not found satisfactory, an additional year will be granted for improvement. During this period, the individual will retain the designation of a Junior Research Fellow. After three years, the work will be re-evaluated, and if improvement is noted, the Fellow will receive an additional two years under the SRF.
- The total period of fellowship, combining JRF and SRF, spans five years. There is no provision for further extension beyond this period.
